New Study Confirms No Connection Between Mobile Phones and Brain Cancer
In a significant development, a new systematic review has confirmed that mobile phones are not linked to brain cancer, dispelling long-standing concerns about the potential health risks of radio wave exposure. The review, commissioned by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and published today in the journal Environment International, analysed over 5,000 studies, including 63 key studies from 1994 to 2022.
For years, the fear that mobile phones might cause cancer has persisted, largely due to the devices being held close to the head and their emission of non-ionising radiation, also known as radio waves. However, this comprehensive review provides the strongest evidence to date that mobile phone use does not increase the risk of brain cancer or other head or neck cancers, even with prolonged use of over ten years.
The research addresses past concerns, particularly those stemming from the 2011 classification by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which labeled radio wave exposure as a "possible carcinogen." This classification, based on limited evidence from earlier observational studies, had sparked widespread concern. However, the new review, which includes more recent and extensive data, offers a more robust conclusion, aligning with the scientific consensus that mobile phone use is not harmful to human health.
As mobile phones and wireless technologies continue to be an integral part of daily life, the findings are reassuring, confirming that existing national and international safety limits effectively protect users. Nonetheless, experts emphasize the need for ongoing research to monitor the impact of emerging technologies and ensure continued safety.
The review's findings are expected to play a crucial role in countering persistent misconceptions and misinformation regarding mobile phones and cancer, offering a clear message that there is no established health risk associated with mobile phone use.
